When it comes RVing, especially for extended periods of time, it is important to stay connected to those you love. Whether it is to check in or to share your discoveries from nature, you need to be able to stay connected. There are a few good options when it comes to communication across the nation.
Wireless Cards for your Laptop
Many companies offer a wireless card for mobile Internet. It is important to know which ones stand up for what they are selling. Below are a few of the ones we’ve had the best time with and have heard the most encouraging reviews on.
Boingo
This service only works at Wi-Fi hotspots but this can be a very economical decision. With communication devices becoming more necessary, hotspots are sprouting up everywhere! You can also take this quite far; their service covers North America and even extends through South America! There are no overages on downloading, nor fees or contracts. Boingo gives you super fast Internet for only $9.95 a month.
Clear
When it comes to getting the job done and coming in at a friendly price, Clear gets it. Their speed is great, topping out at 4G. It is on-the-go friendly, because there is no need for anyone to come and install it on your machine. The major downside is that there are limits; they only cover 80 cities nationwide. That can be limiting, but it could also allow you to stay off the grid and get some peace.
Starband
If you want to take the Internet with you in your Iowa RV, there are options for that, too. While it’s great to get away from everything, yet still be connected to the World Wide Web, it comes at a price. This comes in the form of your own personal satellite. This is not a cheap option; depending on the installation, prices range from $1,700 to a whopping $6,000! The monthly service charge has a wide gap. (Anywhere from $55 to $135.) While it isn’t T1 speed, it is a broadband connection with more than 10 times dial-up. It’s also assuring to know that you don’t have to be near a city to send an email. If RVing is your passion, this could be the way to go.
What about the phone?
Has the thought of paying a cell phone bill plus Internet during your travel gotten you down? If you have the Internet – you have a phone! All you need is a g-mail account. Calling from g-mail is free; it’s run through a program called Google Voice. All you have to do is log on and under your folders and contacts on the left is a tab called “Call Phone”. When clicked, a dial pad comes up on the toolbar of your browser. All calls in North America are free. This way, you can have the internet and phone calls. The only downside is that calling from your browser does not allow you to receive calls just yet.
