If you want to really experience the “flavor” of a new place when you’re on your next Iowa RV road trip, consider visiting the farmers markets. They’re a fun blend of food and entertainment, crafts and characters.
Farmers markets are great for several reasons. First, the food is fresh and healthy. After all, it just came off the vine or out of the ground. Next, when you shop at one you are supporting local farmers. We were shocked when we found out that farmers usually get less than 10 cents of every dollar you spend at the grocery store. By shopping at farmers markets, you are supporting a family for whom farming is still a way of life. Finally, you can get recommendations from the locals about what to see and do in their home communities. There’s nothing like discovering those hidden RV travel gems!
The Iowa Farmers Market Association lists its members on its website http://www.iafarmersmarkets.org/About_Us.html, including links to several of the growers. The Des Moines market includes not only great food, but kids activities, and performances by local singers. Farmers are selling everything from fresh herbs, and eggs, to local wines, ostrich, and tilapia. They might even give you a recipe tip or two!
And, you can also check out these sites for even more markets in other states:
Go savor the flavor of summer!
