Jack-O-Lantern
Halloween only comes once a year so when it’s here, going all out is common. From over-the-top themes to frightening costumes, there are many ways to live up this candy-centered time of the year. One of the most popular ways to display holiday cheer is with a Jack-O-Lantern. Here are a few tips on how to carve your pumpkin for the perfect effect!
Set Up
Once you’ve gotten the perfect shape and color pumpkin, it’s time to take it home. No idea what you want it to look like? Head on over to a hobby store or your local retailer and look for books of pumpkin stencils that range from scenes to faces that you can carve. Are you artistic on your own? Forget the scenes and go free style!
Cleaning
Before you start, make sure to give the pumpkin a good scrub off. There will typically be dirt so cleaning it will ensure the safety of the carver. Now that you’re ready to dig in, you’ll need to start by making sure you cut around the stem in a way that it will fit back on top without falling through, like a wedge. Once you have a good hole, begin taking all the seeds out. There will be a lot and plenty of orange, goo-feeling strings to go with it. Even though it’s Halloween, don’t be afraid to stick your hands in there. Just when you think it’s clear, you reach your hand in and there is another mass to pull out.
Shape
Now, use a serrated knife to trace the outline of whatever scene you want to depict. Beware of sharp edges when carving; you might not know your own strength when getting those edges. Once the scene is complete, add a candle to turn your carved pumpkin into a Jack-O-Lantern. If you are leaving one in your motorhome windows, use a flameless candle to avoid a fire hazard.
